Anti-european sentiment is brewing among some citizens of Great Britain due to the Europe Union's (EU) banning of British beef in May 1996. In one expert's opinion Great Britain's withdrawal from the EU is not probable either by prime minister John Major, or his likely successor Tony Blair.

The road ahead for Maastricht: European Community
Article Abstract:
The Maastricht Treaty on European Union will probably be ratified but may not be implemented. Current problems with the currency exchange rate mechanism may lead to a rejection of the single currency plan, which would lead to disintegration of the European Monetary Union.

Denmark's no vote and France's weak yes spells trouble for the Maastricht treaty. Unless the exchange-rate mechanism (erm) is ratified the next step, the economic monetary union (emu) is impossible. Strategies for success put forth by different countries are discussed.
