Independent streak
Article Abstract:
Thai telecoms firms are seeking help from foreign Southeast Asian firms, but they appear to be following the national trend of resisting overseas domination. Mobile-phone operator Total Access Communications, for example, is seeking a foreign partner. The company forecasts slower growth and it will have to write off a substantial portion of its estimated $500 million of foreign-exchange exposure. However, analysts anticipate that it will allow interested foreign party SingTel to acquire only a 10% stake in existing shares and seek additional agreements with other companies to avoid SingTel domination.

Cutting in on cellular
Article Abstract:
Telephone Organization of Thailand has authorized Thai Telephone and Telecommunications (TT and T) and TelecomAsia to introduce a new system developed in Japan, Personal Handyphone System (PHS). Thailand represents the first significant export market for this system and its progress in the Thai market will have a major impact on how much the system grows. TT and T and TelecomAsia also hope that this move will precede a wider liberalization of the mobile phone market in Thailand.
