India: the untouchables
Article Abstract:
The role of caste and crime in the murky political scenario of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is studied. A close look is taken at the tactics employed by Chief Minister Mayawati in the arrest of state legislator and member of the high Rajput caste, Raghuraj Pratap Singh. The allegations made against Singh and events leading up to his final arrest are discussed.
