Japan's Liberal Democratic Party's prominent leader Shin Kanemaru intends to resign from parliament due to strong public criticism against his accepting illegal payments from a businessman with close underworld links. Kanemaru's resignation is expected to influence the stability of the Takeshita faction which, being the largest faction in the ruling party, plays a decisive role in appointments and policy decisions. Kamemaru is backing Ichiro Ozawa as the next chairman of the Takeshita faction.

Japan's political outlook remains obscure as the special parliamentary session to select the next prime minister fast approaches. The dominant Liberal Democratic Party continues to crumble, while opposition coalitions form and dissolve almost daily. Many politicians express interest in a temporary supra-cabinet government authorized only to pass political and electoral reform bills, headed by Deputy Prime Minister Masaharu Gotoda.
