Indonesia: domestic air travel slows as carriers cut back service
Article Abstract:
Indonesia's six airlines have been grounded as a result of declining demand for air travel and increasingly unprofitable operating costs due to the economic crisis in the region. The number of daily domestic flights is expected to fall by as much as 80% by the end of 1998. Indonesia's failing air travel industry has made the country more vulnerable to the ongoing financial crisis in Asia with many of the nation's 17,000 islands remaining inaccessible except by air because of rough terrain and lack of infrastructure.
