The lap-top trader
Article Abstract:
The Internet has meant that online trading in stocks has become more common, and this has had a major impact on the industry. Some brokers offer online services aimed at mainstream investors, and also operate offline, but there are also brokers which only offer online services. Charles Schwab is in the first category, and SureTrade and Datek are in the second category. There is a lively financial press, published electronically, for the online market, and online message boards are available.

In praise of day traders
Article Abstract:
Online day traders in stocks have been accused of causing stock price volatility, but they represent a move toward democracy, and they have increased liquidity while pushing down commissions. They also force market-makers to be alert, since the converge on those who do not react fast. There is little evidence that their activity leads to volatility. They may be gamblers, but stock market gambling is no worse than other types of gambling. They may also be able to react faster than institutional investors if stock prices fall rapidly.
