Indonesia timber cartel members feel backlash of Hasan's hardball tactics as rivals move in
Article Abstract:
The Indonesian Wood Panel Assn. (Apkindo) may soon lose its control over the Indonesian plywood sector. For one, Korean buyers are boycotting Indonesian plywood in favor of Malaysia's, while the Japanese and Chinese have also slashed their purchases. These moves have led to a substantial decline in the Indonesian plywood industry's exports in 1994. The Korean boycott was triggered by a policy change implemented by Apkindo, wherein importers must buy only through an agent that it has appointed.
