Industry booms in China

China Daily reported that China's exports of computer-related products increased 73%, or $4.51 billion in the first half of 1998. Imports of computer products hiked 38% to $2.23 billion, while exports of automatic data-processing equipment doubled in January 1998 to June 1998 from the same period in 1997 to $3.23 billion. Computer systems, scanners and CD-ROMs were the leading exported products in China in the first half of 1998, while printers and storage equipment were the main imported products. The 73% increase in exports of computer-related products resulted in a trade surplus in computer products of $2.28 billion.

Delivering Starbucks to China
Article Abstract:
Beijing Mei Da Coffee Co. has struck a deal with Starbucks Coffee International of Seattle, WA, to put up Starbucks franchise coffee shops in Beijing, China. Lawrence Maltz, head of Beijing Mei Da, stated that he has been selling Starbucks coffee to hotels in Beijing for the last four years and that it was time for him to open a Starbucks outlet in the country. Maltz, who used to be an executive of Starbucks, also stated that it would be challenging to convince the Chinese to switch from drinking hot tea to drinking java coffee.

IMAX sets focus on China
Article Abstract:
IMAX Corp. is searching for potential allies to put up several large-format, 3-D movie houses in China. IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond stated that the search is part of the company's efforts to enhance its market position in the China. Gelfond also stated that the company is looking into the possibility of establishing a $50-million investment fund to put up movie theaters in Guangzhou, Xian, Beijing and other major Chinese cities. Gelfond added that he is optimistic that its cinemas in China would be well-attended by spectators.
