Inferring market power from time-series data: the case of the banking firm
Article Abstract:
The existence of perfect competition in banking can be disproved by a test based on the long-term links between deposit rates and security rates. A further examination of whether there are differences in pricing policies across markets and banking services shows that for most banks, policies which are based on some upward slope in the deposit supply curve are more common than pure price-taking behaviour. It also seems that banks present in more concentrated local banking sectors have greater control over the pricing of money market deposit accounts.
