A national spatial planning framework
Article Abstract:
The need for a more comprehensive planning framework for the UK has long been known, but the issue has become more urgent with the establishment of regional devolution and the European Union's developing interest in spatial frameworks. The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) regards a national planning strategy as an important part of the policies needed for an effective planning service. To achieve its aims, the RTPI has set up a steering group with the objectives of establishing a national framework, developing an appropriate methodology, identifying national issues amd stimulating open debates on national planning.

Spatial planning in Europe: the issue for planning in Britain
Article Abstract:
The UK government has failed to participate fully in moves within Europe as a whole towards making very significant decisions about planning. This comes as the European Union prepares to adopt a spatial planning strategy which will go beyond national boundaries and inevitably affect the UK. The UK has failed to allow the full-scale debate about urban change and sustainable development which has characterised approaches towards spatial planning policy in other European countries, including Denmark, Germany and France.

Coordination in European spatial development: Whose responsibility?
Article Abstract:
The responsibility for European spatial development policy remains unclear, in spite of repeated demands by the European Parliament and the EU member States. While spatial development is thus the coincidental outcome of EU sectoral policies, there is no unit in the European Commission coordinating the spatial consequences of Community policies.
