Infostrada gets a speedy start in Italy: phone-service subscriptions beat expectations

Italian telecommunications company Infostrada S.p.A. is closing in on the competition, having acquired its one millionth customer. The company's primary rivals in the fight for market share are Telecom Italia and Wind Telecommunicazioni S.p.A. With sales growing 125% last year, Infostrada hopes to maintain its place in the market through involvement in both fixed and mobile communications, as well as the introduction of new iternet services.

Telecom Italia's chief surrenders reins
Article Abstract:
Franco Bernabe, the chief executive officer of Telecom Italia, has resigned from his post. Mr. Bernabe's resignation opens the way for Olivetti SpA's proposed acquisition of Telecom Italia. On May 21, 1999, Olivetti acquired a 52% share of Telecom Italia. Along with Mr. Bernabe, the majority of Telecom Italia's board resigned. Telecom Italia is a former state monopoly.
