There are a number of problems with reporting statistics, since they may not be accurate, but startling statistics still tend to be given more prominence in the press than more accurate and mundane figures. This is true for reports of massacres and accidents. Journalists should bear in mind the interests of those who provide data, and emphasize that estimates may not be accurate, and should admit to mistakes. Readers should also beware of the tendency that journalists have to exaggerate .
