Ontario Hydro, an electric utility, is conducting negotiations with Canadian and foreign-owned advertising agencies in connection with the management of its advertising account. The agencies involved in the negotiation process include MacLaren McCann, Saatchi & Saatchi, TBW Chiat/Day, BBDO, DMB&B, Harrod & Mirlin/FCB, Leo Burnett, Publicis, SMW, Byrne and Bensimon. The move was made possible by the opening up of Ontario advertising accounts to non-Canadian interests, which was initiated by the Management Board Secretariat.

Bell Canada's move to stick with its timeline was praised by agencies vying for its $60-million-plus ad account in Ontario, Canada. Incumbents Leo Burnett, BBDO, Canada and Cossette Communication-Marketing as well as TBWA Chiat/Day, Vickers & Benson and MacLaren McCann have until the week of Jun. 22, 1998, to prepare a strategic and creative presentation. Leo Burnett President Jim MacKenzie said the creative limit is an advantage for all shortlisted ad agencies because it levels the playing field.
