Internet economics: a thinkers' guide
Article Abstract:
There are divisions between economists on how the see the impact of the internet, with some seeing little benefit, and others seeing a boost to growth and a favorable impact on inflation. Internet stocks appear to be overvalued, but there may still be a beneficial impact on growth and for consumers. Productivity gains should arise from investments in IT including the internet. Information has become cheaper, and there is greater price transparency. A drop in transaction costs means that smaller firms can operate more effectively. Cost savings from business-to-business transactions can help boost growth, though demand may also rise.
