Article Abstract:
Major pub operators with large managed estates such as Whitbread, Allied Domecq, Scottish & Newcastle and Bass, have been focusing investments on managed operations, reducing their involvement in the tenanted sector. Consumer spending in pubs rose by 10% between 1993 and 1997, with higher takings attributed mostly to increased food sales. Loyalty schemes have become popular in the pub industry, but the most important influence on pub selection is atmosphere.
