Article Abstract:
US banks began developing systems for measuring commercial credit risk in the 1980s, and European banks are slowly following their lead. Barclay's Bank uses a computer model to estimate the average default risk of its loan portfolio, and reserves provisions against loans as they are made.

Survival tactics: European banks
Article Abstract:
Belgium banks such as the Generale de Banque are making extensive preparations for the European Monetary Union planned for 2002. The banks hope to offset increased costs and loss of forex revenue by aggressively marketing, both nationally and in other EU countries.

Japan's Fuji Bank and others have been opening branches in other Asian countries such as Taiwan and Vietnam. The banks loaned $113 billion to Asian countries from the beginning of 1994 to the end of 1995, up from $40 billion. These loans could be risky.
