China objected to plans to establish a pension system in Hong Kong, saying it would bring in the worst elements of the European welfare state. However, some Asian countries such as South Korea and Singapore are starting to realize welfare and health benefits help to stabilize a nation's economy.

The exodus of foreign fund managers from markets such as Malaysia's has been caused by the unfair treatment of minority shareholders within the system. Family-owned majority holdings are leveraged by political cronies in a system whose rules can be used to deny minority holders a share-vote.
