Syria's nods and winks
Article Abstract:
Arab countries are concerned about the leisurely pace that Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak, appears to have adopted to seek a settlement with Palestinians. Syria has reportedly suggested that some Palestinian groups based in Damascus end their armed struggle, though this report is unconfirmed. Barak has to put any agreement reached with Syria to a referendum in Israel. Israel has increase support from the US, which argues that it is Israel's role to decide on timetables.

Israel, Syria and that little sliver of the Galilee shore
Article Abstract:
Peace talks have foundered between Syria and Israel, and no progress has been achieved from a meeting between President Bill Clinton and President Hafez Assad of Syria. There is a disagreement between Syria and Israel over where the new boundary should be if Israel withdraws from the Golan Heights. Israel wants the shoreline of the Sea of Galilee, and so does Syria. This issue has symbolic importance for both countries, though the strategic issues are less important.
