Israelis who say no to peace with Syria
Article Abstract:
There is opposition in Israel to a peace agreement with Syria, butthe government argues that they will accept an agreement when they become aware of the benefits rather than the costs. An agreement is possible though there are some obstacles, but a referendum may not result in a favorable vote for the government. The coldness of the Syrian foreign minister does not help gain public support in Israel. Barak could also develop a wider plan including Palestinians, who are concerned that they are being ignored due to the focus on Syria.

A Syrian-Israeli peace?
Article Abstract:
Talks have begun between Israel and Syria, and real progress could be achieved, with the return of the Golan Heights to Syria in return for an embassyin Syria and security guarantees. The withdrawal of Israel from Lebanon, and the desire of the ageing Syrian leader, Hafez Assad, to deal with the problem, have made progress possible. There are some obstacles to a settlement, but they can be overcome, and there is a genuine desire for an agreement to be achieved.
