Italy: Machine tool production growth is blunted
Article Abstract:
The machine tool industry is set to close 2001 with a production increase of just 1.1%, nine points below end of 2000 forecasts, and one of the worst results in recent years. The Ucimu, the association for the manufacturers of machine tools and robots, has announced provisional 2001 results, sending out a clear message to the Government, to cancel all fiscal and administrative measures which are stifling small and medium sized companies. Ucimu figures indicate a 2001 annual production of EUR 4.63bn, an increase of 1.1% on the previous year, mainly due to a 9.6% increase in exports. In contrast, deliveries on the internal market fell by 5.7%, to EUR 2.39bn. Andrea Riello, the chairman of Riello Sistemi and the Ucimu affirmed that the slump over the second half of 2001 has dismissed all the most optimistic forecasts, which first spoke of a 10% growth in 2001, then revised to 5%, and finally down to a disappointing 1%. However, in the light of the disastrous second half of the year, he considers the final figure acceptable. The situation is expected to get worse in 2002, with production and exports respectively falling by 0.6% and 3.7%, and orders not picking up in the US until March, and midway through the year in Europe. Mr. Riello says that his sector is indicative of the general gloomy economic context, as all the major areas of industry consume machine tools and robots. Mr. Riello says that the development of small and medium sized companies should be stimulated by lowering the fiscal impact on the revaluation of real estate, and liberalising redemption periods on investments. The Ucimu feels that such measures could increase sector production by 4%.
