Italy is investigating Coca-Cola, bottlers on complaints of abuse of market power
Article Abstract:
Coca-Cola Co. and its bottlers are under probe by Italian regulators for allegedly tying up its wholesalers to exclusive deals and loyalty projects. PepsiCo Inc. has complained to antitrust authorities that it could not penetrate beverage dealers because of the incentives offered by Coca-Cola. In exchange for solely stocking on Coca-Cola products, the wholesalers are given bonuses and rebates, said Pepsi Co. The wholesalers, which supply hotels, bars and restaurants, are rewarded on the basis of the sales volumes of Coca-Cola products, said Pepsi.

Italy extends Coca-Cola antitrust probe
Article Abstract:
An antitrust probe into Coca-Cola Co. has been extended by regulators in Italy. The regulators said a major supermarket chain's complaint about Coca-Cola's sales practices warranted a expanded investigation. The probe began in July 1998. Regulators conducted an investigation to see if Coca-Cola was exploiting its dominant market presence by implementing exclusive agreements and loyalty programs. PepsiCo Inc. claimed Coca-Cola was denying them beverage wholesaler access by giving rebates and bonuses to the wholesalers.
