Italy sends in troops

An undercover operation has been launched by Italy and Albania to help combat the growing traffic in illegal immigrants from Albania to Italy. Under a new bilateral agreement between the two countries, about 12 Italian agents have been allowed into Albania to ensure that local police do not collude with smugglers. Several Italian military vessels and a coast guard force of 300 will be stationed on the Albanian island of Sazan. Italian authorities say that about 150,000 illegal immigrants have made their way across the Adriatic Sea into European Union countries since the collapse of communism in Albania in 1990.

The reprivatization of Italy's Banca Nazionale del Lavoro has proven beneficial to the balance sheet of the bank. The bank spent $2.6 billion and decreased costs to record a profit for Jan-Jul 1998. The Italian Treasury has sold shares in the bank which has proven popular with investors.
