Italy's ruling Olive Tree coalition, headed by Prime Minister Roman Prodi, has helped stabilize Italy's political structure in its first year in office. However, the center-left coalition may be fraying. Prodi might be challenged by two coalition partners: leftist Massimo D'Alema and center-rightist Lamberto Dini.

Italy's Chamber of Deputies has voted to reform its voting rules similar to the changes forced on the Senate by the overwhelming Apr 1993 plebiscite. Three quarters of the Deputies will be elected on a UK-style first-past-the-post rule, which should solidify the political center.
