Italy's government soldiers on, but for how long?
Article Abstract:
The Italian government headed by Romano Prodi faces threats from the Refounded Communists, and there are divisions within the Olive Tree coalition itself. The government has succeeded in gaining entry to the single European currency, and the semi-truce that helped achieved this is under stress. There is little wish for a general election, and the political right is disorganized. The Refounded Communists may also be less likely to gain favors if Prodi goes, yet Prodi himself may decide that he has had enough.

Italy plants a new tree
Article Abstract:
The leader of the Italian Democrats of the Left, Massimo D'Alema, is to become prime minister of Italy and set up a government. The new government will include the Democratic Union for the Republic, centrists, Greens, former communists and communists. The Olive Tree coalition which won the elections of 1996 has ceased to exist, after two and a half years of comparative stability. D'Alema has previously sought to reform the constitution, and may try to do this again.
