Italy's leftist alliance, known as the Olive Tree coalition, and the country's right-wing group, known as the Freedom Pole, will be facing each other off on election day, April 21, 1996. Corruption and name bashing are at that heart of the campaign, leaving real issues such as the economy unaddressed.

Antonio Di Pietro, who has successfully prosecuted a high number of corrupt government officials in Italy, is its most respected political figure and could likely win a national election himself. Both parties running in the next election hope to get his endorsement.
