Yunnan rising
Article Abstract:
The Chinese province of Yunnan is aiming to become a major economic centre, benefiting from its strategic position, close to Burma, Laos and Thailand. The area is very backward compared to some parts of China, but it is more advanced than these southern countries and is able to provide goods they need. The province is growing at an annual 10%. Central government supports the development, benefiting from the additional security afforded by economic ties with Asean member Burma. However, Yunnan still needs a vast amount of infrastructure expenditure, and its markets are not ideal trading partners.

Kiss and sell: office worker transplants theme pub to cowboy town
Article Abstract:
Entrepreneur Du Xinyue launched Kiss, one of Dalian's hottest theme pubs, in Sept 1995, targeting a young, affluent, bored clientele. Technology and quality permeate it, with a staff of Dalian Languages Institute graduates, a telephone on every table, and a US DJ playing hits air-freighted from Hong Kong. Du, 31, wrote ads and ran a public relations company in Taiwan, but left when he realized he was in danger of becoming a salaryman. In Dalian he opened a hamburger joint and cultivated a habit of corporate citizenship.
