Japan comes back down to earth
Article Abstract:
Japan's prominence in the global economic arena has dimmed following its protracted domestic economic and political problems. The speculative bubble which burst in 1990 has dragged down the economy and left its political system in shambles. Previous business practice, which were previously looked up as unique Japanese qualities, are now considered inherent weaknesses. However, the outside world should not underrate Japan's present condition because it is expected to emerge stronger after restructuring to regain its place in the global market.

APEC's gurus suggest speedier liberalization
Article Abstract:
Members of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) seek to speed up the process of global liberalization in the area. APEC members have set a Nov. 1995 meeting to discuss the merits of a 50% rule, which will commit them to specific tariff levels covered in the Uruguay Round of negotiations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The forum will also consider dispute-mediation services for resolving trade conflicts.
