Japan
Article Abstract:
Japan has seen a rise in gross domestic product of 3% taking inflation into account, in 1st qtr 1996. Growth could reach 3.6% for the whole of 1996. Business confidence improved from Feb 1996 to May 1996 according to a survey by the Bank of Japan. Recovery in the private sector should be strong enough to maintain growth, but growth levels could still drop in 1997 due to tax changes and lower levels of public spending. Exports are likely to benefit from a drop in the value of the Japanese yen.

Article Abstract:
There is concern over the strength of Japanese economic recovery especially since fiscal policywill be tighter in 1997. This means that interest rates may remain stable to 2nd half 1997 and the Japanese yen is likely to be weak. Japanese gross domestic product fell by 0.7% in 2nd qtr 1996 due to weaker consumer spending, and industrial production has been affected by excess inventories. Inflation is low and there appears little danger of inflationary pressure due to the slack in the economy.

Article Abstract:
Japan has shown strong economic growth for 1st qtr 1999, and this has affected financial markets. The Japanese yen has risen in value and the Bank of Japan has sought to control its rise in case the economic recovery is jeopardized. There is concern that unemployment is still rising, and the strong performance of 1st qtr 1999 could be a result of temporary phenomena. There has been an effort to boost the economy through public spending, and this should fade after 2nd qtr 1999.
