Oil and commodities
Article Abstract:
Petroleum prices have risen in 1996, partly due to tension in the Middle east and a suspension of a United Nations agreement to permit exports of petroleum from Iraq. The severity of the 1996 to 1997 winter and the policy of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will both affect prices in 1997. Food prices have risen in 1996 but could be eased slightly in 1997. The price of industrial materials dropped in 3rd qtr 1996 and this is partly due to a drop in copper prices. Prices should firm as industrial activity recovers in 1997.

Oil and commodities
Article Abstract:
Petroleum prices dropped in 1997, and this fall looks set to continue in 1998. Iraqi supplies could be affected by tension in the Gulf, but there is still a likelihood of excess supply. Prcies for non-oil commodities have dropped, on the whole, though uncertainty relating to El Nino has led to price volatility for some commodities. The economic crisis that has affected some Asian economies of likely to affect demand, though Europe and the US are likely to show robust demand in 1998. Capacity has expanded for some sectors such as copper.
