Japanese business methods: couldn't we all do a little bit worse?

Proposals by political and business leaders in Japan are asking Japanese corporations to relax their competitive drive a bit. This could be accomplished by lowering production goals and working shorter hours. These changes would improve Japan's relations with other countries.

Japanese trade tremors

Japan is mired in a recession, with domestic demand for goods down. Its current trade surplus is a result of lower spending on imports by the Japanese public. This could cause other countries, particularly the US, to call for a better balance of trade.
