Japan's plastic pygmies
Article Abstract:
The Japanese plastics industry needs to consolidate its operations to face international competition. Japan's 14 major plastics manufacturers fared badly in 1992. Companies are troubled by small-scale operations and high imported inputs. Additional problems include a fall in export rates due to increased competition in ethylene and propylene production, long distances between end user factories and production complexes and removal of imports under a GATT agreement. The best solution to the problems would be the merger of small companies.

Traveller's tales
Article Abstract:
Niigata Prefecture in Japan is important as a rice growing region and for manufacturing rice products. Niigata's rice industry has mechanized the production of such products as mochi, or glutinous rice patties, and senbei, or rice crackers. However, Niigata's rice farmers believe that the proposed importation of foreign rice into Japan threatens their livelihood. With Japanese rice being seven or eight times the cost of imported rice, a change in trade policy is inevitable despite the farmers' claim that foreign rice is inferior.
