Japan's retailers look abroad: Odayaku's move signals department stores' woes
Article Abstract:
Japanese department store operator Odayaku Electric Railway has announced its plans to vacate its outlet in Sagaimono, Tokyo and allow US developer American Malls International to manage the place. Analysts believe Odayaku's move mirrors the dismal state of the local department store chain industry and could possibly result in more closures. Other analysts assert that increased competition from specialty retail stores and a lack of incentives for consumers has contributed to the failure of smaller chains.

Japanese retailers' ties bolster stocks' outlook
Article Abstract:
Analysts consider Isetan Co. and Hankyu Dept. Stores Inc. (Hankyu), two of Japan's biggest retailers, as good investment options. Isetan and Hankyu shares trade at 100 times projected 1996 per-share earnings but experts state that this is still a good value as compared to other stocks listed in Tokyo. Both companies also boast very good cash flow and profit profiles.
