Japan's worry about work
Article Abstract:
Japan is finding it hard to accept that almost full employment can no longer be taken for granted. Similarly, changes in working practices are also having a significant social impact. Companies facing falling profits are now replacing full-time permanent staff with less expensive part-time workers, while unemployment is rising sharply, especially as many small companies close down. Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi plans to create 1 million jobs, but the government has not released any details about this programme so far.
