Jerry Brown's clashing philosophies
Article Abstract:
Mayor of Oakland, California, Jerry Brown, argues that globalization is creating a society that is more unsustainable and more unjust, yet he also argues that globalization has to be accepted. He aims to revive the urban center by encouraging more residents in the center. Oakland is reviving as unemployment and crime drop, and Brown aims to use the revival to illustrate his idea of radical decentralization. Brown's efforts will not be fruitful unless he seeks to strengthen the links between Oakland and the rest of the world.

Flattening to deceive: tax reform
Article Abstract:
A flat tax is an excellent idea, but not as proposed by presidential candidate Jerry Brown. His 13% tax plan allows no exemptions for the poor, but allows a few deductions which could be used as loopholes. His value-added tax plan is also flawed. The US needs a good flat rate tax plan, but this is not it.

The return of Ronald Reagan
Article Abstract:
Bob Dole is beginning to sound more like Ronald Reagan despite his criticism of the ex-president's political moves. Like Reagan he is over 70, reads his speeches from a teleprompter and is promising tax reform. Tax reform is a tricky platform, because it may increase the budget deficit even further.
