Beyond satire
Article Abstract:
Honore Daumier was a 19th century French sculptor, painter and caricaturist who was imprisoned for his caricature of Louis-Philippe, King of France. He produced lithographs for the radical press, and lived in poverty. His mixed media drawings of later life were bought by a few collectors such as Degas. Daumier was able to retire to the country at the end of his life, but he was almost blind by then. Much of his work could be seen as forecasting later trends in art, such as work by Picasso.

Catching up: Georges Rouault
Article Abstract:
Georges Rouault is less well known than his contemporaries, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, because his subject matter often seems obscure. His heavy use of dark color also makes his works less accessible. He made no attempt to commercialize his work and was dedicated to perfecting his art.
