Article Abstract:
The Nigerian ruler, General Abdulsalam Abubakar, has made a number of positive changes such as freeing political prisoners, and fair elections are planned for 1999. He also plans to end state monopolies, partially privatize some companies, and end Nigeria's shortage of fuel. There is uncertainty as to who could become the new political leaders of Nigeria, especially following the death of the opposition politician, Moshood Abiola. The new leader may come from the south of Nigeria, since there has been rioting which has convinced northern leaders that they should cede power.
