Jorg Haider, an Austrian conundrum
Article Abstract:
Jorg Haider leads the Freedom party in Austria, and he appears to have ambitions to be chancellor. His opinions are flexible, and some of his statements have involved praise for Nazi policies. He has since declared that some of his past pronouncements have been insensitive, and that Hitler's dictatorship was cruel. Some Jewish spokesmen do not see him as anti-Semitic. The control of patronage by the two main Austrian parties is the main reason for the rise in support for Haider.

Jorg Haider, Austria's - and Europe's - border guard
Article Abstract:
Jorg Haider is head of Austria's Freedom Party and the party's share of the vote has risen to nearly 28% in European elections in 1996 from 4% of the national vote in 1986. Haider has toned down his views and focused on lower taxes and cleaner government as well as his 'Austria first' message. The party has been affected by allegations of embezzlement against one of its MPs, but may still play an important role in Austrian politics. Haider opposes enlargement of the European Union during the forseeable future, and his message is clearer than that of the main coalition parties.
