Austria's Freedom party may form part of a coalition government following the failure of the People's party to set up a government with the Social Democrats. Jorg Haider heads the Freedom party, a far-right organization, and Haider could become chancellor if the Freedom party performs well in the coalition. Haider is hostile to immigrants. The two main parties in Austria had divided public sector posts between them, and this is one reason for support for the Freedom party.

the new coalition government in Austria includes members of the Freedom party, led by Jorg Haider, who remains in his post as governor of Carinthia, while having an influence on the government. The party has signed a declaration which involves a commitment to democracy and human rights. Much of the government's program was decided by the previous government, and includes liberalization of the labor market and privatization. There is concern that the Freedom party could perform better if the government fell and new elections were held.
