Jusco maps out Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
Jusco Stores (Hong Kong) Co attempts to strengthen its business operations in Hong Kong as it plans to open three additional department store chains in the country. Although the plan was conceived during the course of the Asian financial crisis, analysts believe that the decision would yield significant benefits. Aside from taking advantage of low renting rates charged by landlords, the Japan-based retailer is also expected to dominate the local market with the recent collapse of some major competitors. Further, Jusco officials do not regard lending as a major problem, since the company has adequate investment to support its operations in the long run.

Global funds show promise
Article Abstract:
Global equity funds sold in Hong Kong posted an average of 1.8% since April 1998 to June 1998 and 14.6% in the past 12 months. The good performance of the global equity funds offer investors an alternative as the Asian economy staggers. The leading three global funds sold in Hong Kong all posted returns of over 20% for 1998. However, the disadvantage of global funds is that they can be extended so broadly that they fail to exploit to the fullest the market rallies in several countries.
