Just not enough: Delhi, Dhaka try to share the Ganges' limited waters
Article Abstract:
Talks in Dhakka in June, 1995 over water from the Ganges River led to an agreement between India and Bangladesh. The two countries agreed to reach a permanent understanding without any extraneous conditions, delinking further such talks from other issues. They also will restore the Joint Rivers Commission, inactive since 1988, to monitor water levels and other disputed elements. India controls the water where the river splits into the Padma River, which enters Bangladesh, and the Bhagirathi-Hooghly River flowing past Calcutta.

Water and balm
Article Abstract:
India and Bangladesh have reached a 30-year agreement on sharing water from the Ganges, which is regarded as a holy river by Hindus. This deal will bring opportunities to strengthen trading links between the two countries. They have been in dispute over the water of the Ganges since 1975, when India constructed a barrage across the river with the aim of diverting some of the water to another river. India hopes that the deal will create goodwill which can be used to pursue agreements on other bilateral issues.
