KARNATAKA DITHERS ON INTERVENTION AS WHOLESALE TOMATO PRICES CRASH
Article Abstract:
The Government of Karnataka is yet to develop a market intervention scheme for the tomato growers. The wholesale prices of tomato have fallen to a low of Rs2 to Rs2.25 a kg in the Bangalore markets and Re1 to Rs1.50 per kg in the APMC yard in Kolar district. The fall in the wholesale prices is attributed to a bumper crop in Karnataka and fall in demand from Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Maharashtra. The Horticultural Producers Co-operative Marketing Society Ltd (Hopcoms) has been getting around 15 to 20 tonnes of tomato during the past few days against normal procurement of 10 to 12 tonnes. It is now buying the tomatoes at Rs2.25 a kg (Rs3.60 a kg offered a fortnight ago). The average price of tomato is around Re1 per kilogram in the APMC yard in Mulbagal. According to the Karnataka Agro Industries Corporation, about 15,000 hectares of land is under tomato cultivation in Karnataka during the current rabi season. Major areas under tomato cultivation include Kolar, Bangalore Rural, Mysore and Belgaum. (ag)(vr)
