Keeping it in the family
Article Abstract:
Sand Aire Private Equity, a UK investment group, was formed in January 1997 with the aim of providing private equity to small- and medium-sized businesses. The company, founded by former 3i investment director David Williams, has been slow to build, with just eight investments amounting to 19 million pounds sterling in around three years. However, Williams says that quality, not quantity, will be the key to Sand Aire's eventual success.

Anger as HSBC pulls plug on Specialised Finance
Article Abstract:
Senior debt firm HSBC Specialized Finance is being wound up in July 1998, only 8 months after being formed by a management buyout. Up to 25 people are expected to be made redundant, leaving employees shocked by the decision. The main reason for the closure appears to be the Asian currency crisis which could affect the European buyout market, according to HSBC, although the market appears to have remained stable.

A brighter forecast. (Acquisitions Monthly, Newcastle)
Article Abstract:
It is believed that Newcastle would benefit from a larger number of venture capitalists, as there are currently only two based in the city, 3i and Northern Venture Managers (NVM). Deals in the Northeast are usually in the 250,000 pounds sterling to 5 million pounds sterling category and there is a lack of locally based PLCs.
