Swimming against the tide in Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
A number of British expatriates are opting to remain in Hong Kong, even as the date for the colony's reunification with China nears. Most of these expatriates work as members of Hong Kong's civil service. Police inspector Martin Cadman is working to retain their rights as Hong Kong residents to security of tenure in their jobs and the right to retain their lands and properties being threatened for sequestration under the interim legislature. Many of the expatriates have Hong Kong-born spouses and children who would need further protection from the new government.

Taste for things Chinese stirs Hong Kong appetites
Article Abstract:
There has been an unprecedented interest in traditional Chinese arts, history and language among Hong Kong residents as the Jul. 1, 1997 deadline for the island's reversion to Chinese rule approaches. This attitude contrasts with the initial suspicion and even apprehension shown when the idea of unification was first broached several years earlier. This new-found interest is a welcome development for artists, literary men and other intellectuals working in Hong Kong.

Eating on the run is a way of life for many busy families in Hong Kong
Article Abstract:
The Chinese are traditionally fastidious about food but the pressure of life in Hong Kong has forced many to abandon this view in favor of pragmatism. A growing number of Hong Kong residents no longer take time to eat home-cooked meals, preferring the expediency offered by fast food. Even the more upscale eating places have modified their operations to accommodate hectic schedules, serving dishes in assembly-line fashion to busy, time-pressed customers.
