Article Abstract:

The number of Finnish Internet users is growing rapidly and the Finnish network suppliers do not believe the growth to slow down within the next few years. However, during the holiday season the Internet usage decreases considerably. According to HPY , Internet usage is down by 15-20% in summer. According to Sonera, the general strong growth in Internet usage compensates for holiday makers. EUnet says that especially in beautiful weather the Internet usage reduces considerably. At the end of 1996, 20% of Finns used the Internet. In May 1998 the figure was up to 30%. From spring 1997 to spring 1998 the number of home connections has increased from 261,000 to 455,000. Saunalahden Serveri predicts most Finns to be daily users of the Internet within a few years.

Article Abstract:

According to the Federation of Finnish Insurance Companies, natural phenomena normally cause approx. 3% of all indemnity insurance expenses in Finland. In 1998 the share may be twice as large. The total extra expenses will amount to Fmk 60-70mn (US$ 11-13mn). The past 10 years have been rather peaceful in Finland in regards with natural phenomena. The indemnity expenses have levelled out after the great storms in the 1980's.
