France is expecting to see balance of payments experience a large increase in 1997 as a growth of 5.2% in incoming tourist is projected. The first five months of 1997 posted results reflecting the rise in foreign visitors and the weakening of the French franc versus major currencies. In relation, receipts are anticipated to reach over FF160 billion by the end of 1998. Spending overseas by French tourists was relatively high with a strong currency from 1995 to 1996. Spending in 1997 progressed at a slower rate compared to receipts from incoming tourism to create a healthy balance at FF67,755 million.

France has seen more than 87% of all tourist nights spent by the French be spent within the country, representing the strength of domestic tourism. The home of family of friends is the most frequent type of accommodation used, as visiting is one of the most common reasons for travelling. French tourists spend 45.4% of bed nights in their own country at the main homes of family and friends and 19.4% are in secondary homes. Camping accounts for 9.3% of total nights, while hotels represent only 6.2% of bed nights in 1996.
