Credit Suisse First Boston has been affected by a number of setbacks such as losses in Russia in 1998, and the likely temporary closure of some of its businesses in Japan in 1999. The company lacked a coherent strategy for its Japanese operations. Some problems may have arisen as a result of the investment bank's rapid growth. The company is performing well in a number of markets. This strong performance is evident from the comany's resilience when faced with setbacks.

Promotion battle: investment banking

US firms tend to dominate the investment banking industry, but two UK firms are starting to making inroads into that market: Barclays Bank's BZW and NatWest Group's NatWest Markets. BZW is doing well in Eurobonds and project finance. NatWest excels in equity research and mergers.

Deutsche shuffle: German banking
