Article Abstract:
Labor experts believe that the burning of two Sanyo Universal Electric PCL buildings by drunk employees does not indicate worsening labor relations in Thailand. The incident occurred after a breakdown in negotiations over year-end bonuses. Thai workers are used to receiving year-end bonuses equal to several months' salary. However, in Dec. 1996, Sanyo decided to give bonuses equal to four months' wages only compared to the 5.75-month rate in 1995.

United Pacific makes fans with avid fat-trimming

Toy and consumer electronics maker United Pacific Industries has adopted a successful management strategy that is admired by other companies. United Pacific has accelerated and trimmed down the operations of some of its manufacturing subsidiaries that market consumer products under their own brand names. The company has only 13 staff members who are tasked to monitor international operations and its 14,000 employees.

Toshiba defends strategy in the face of grumblings
