Free trade agreements in the textile industries between industrialized nations and countries such as India and China have two main obstacles. The countries are protectionist and do not allow foreign imports, and they have production problems due to old machinery and bad labor relations.

Trade negotiations between the US and Mexico to formulate the North American Free Trade Agreement are moving slowly. Democratic leaders such as Richard Gephardt are fighting it. Trade secretary Carla Hills supports the agreement.
