Kobe quake may cause political tremors in Tokyo
Article Abstract:
The recent earthquake in Kobe, Japan, caused massive damage to infrastructure and serious disruption of production in many industries. Some analysts believe, however, that the biggest casualty of the disaster was the prestige and credibility of the Japanese government. Many normally complacent citizens are already criticizing the government for its slow response to the tragedy as food, drinking water and electricity remain scarce. This widespread loss of faith in government is expected to add further pressure on PM Tomiichi Murayama, whose coalition government has already been weakened by political defections.

Hiking the distance for residents of Kobe
Article Abstract:
A student at Osaka University recounts how he and fellow-members in the school's Wandervogel hiking club traveled to Kobe to help in the rescue efforts for earthquake victims. Leaving Osaka at 6:00 in the morning, the group hiked towards the stricken city for three hours. They were all struck by the massive destruction caused by the earthquake and the despair felt by the residents, most of whom lost everything.
