No let-up in Chechnya
Article Abstract:
Russian forces have gained territory in Chechnya, and Chechen forces have moved to the mountains. There have been claims of human rights abuses by both sides. The war has been popular in Russia, and Russian officials claim that Chechens are planning terrorist actions. Russia is not likely to change its policies as a result of domestic pressure, or as a result of external pressure. There has been criticism from United Nations human rights high commissioner, Mary Robinson, of Russian bombing tactics, but foreign governments have tended to be subdued in their criticisms.

Valleys of death
Article Abstract:
A guerrilla war in Chechnya, Russia, is proving difficult for Russia to control, although the main mountain base of Chechen rebels has been destroyed. Russia is seeking to defend itself against criticism of ill-treatment of Chechen refugees by allowing access to a detention camp, though a press bus was halted on leaving the camp by relatives seeking missing Chechens, and was told to run them over. Reltions between Russia and western countries have not yet been soured as a result of events in Chechnya.

Grisly in Grozny
Article Abstract:
The Russian army has made an embarrassing mess of its invasion of Grozny, Chechnya. The major reasons behind the debacle are low troop morale and incompetent commanders. The humiliation has angered the Russian army, and the all-out assault on Grozny has united Chechen factions.
